Comfort… Not Always a Good Thing

I was talking to a friend the other day about goals and he reminded me of something his brother likes to say… “You only get flak when you’re over the target”

Just so you know, he is a former Naval officer, and this saying comes from the aviation arena. But it is not just a saying about combat flying. It has a much larger meaning in relation to comfort and our comfort zones.

Comfort… It’s something we all strive for on a daily basis. If it’s cold, we want a blanket. If it’s warm, we want a fan. If it’s far we want a ride. If it’s hard we either want some help or we wish it was easier. On the surface, there is nothing wrong with being comfortable.

But Comfort can be dangerous,

Comfort can be deceiving,

Comfort can trick us.

When we are comfortable, we stay put, stay in one place, we don’t have to push ourselves. But we are meant to push ourselves and challenge ourselves on some levels. This is how we grow as people.

This may seem counterintuitive but in many areas of life, you do it every day. If you are a weight-lifter or bodybuilder you don’t just lift the easy weights, you lift the hard weights. The heavy weights push you so you can lift even more. If you are a runner or a bicycler you don’t just go around the block. You push yourself to go farther and farther each time.

You do these things so you can get better at that activity. You do these things and at first, they are hard. They are difficult but the more you do them the less hard, less difficult they become. Before you know it, you’ve reached a new level. This same concept can apply to many areas of your life. You decide where you want to grow and work towards it.

You just have to remember that when you first start pushing yourself or trying something new, it is possible you will fail. At first, it will not be easy, it should not be easy. That is ok. If at first you don’t succeed, you are normal. Despite the old thinking, Failing is not a negative judgment actually just the opposite. It means you tried, you took that first step.
