“I am simply a night light in your 120 Watt world.”
I first said this to a friend as a joke. This came up because people around me acted as if they were so much smarter and brighter. But as I thought about this I realized I DO want to be a night light.
When I was younger. I wanted to be the 120 watt bulb. I wanted to shine brighter than everybody else. But now, I realize I don’t want to outshine everybody else. Sometimes, many times a bright light blinds us as much as it can help us.
I would rather to be there for others in times of need vs trying to overpower them with my blinding light. I want to be a night light.
A night light gives us comfort in the darkness. A night light gives us a direction to follow in the dark. A night light is a constant in the unknown.
Darkness happens. Confusion happens. Uncertainty and fear happen. I can’t change that. No matter how much I may want to.
What I can do, though, is to be there for others. I can offer some small comfort. A night light in the corner of a dark bedroom gives a direction to look towards in the middle of the dark night. I want to be that night light. My hope is that maybe, just maybe, I can help someone as they work their way through their darkness.
My question for you is this-
-How can I be a better night light to help others?
My challenge to you is this-
-Are you willing to be a night light in someone else’s darkness?
