Your inner gold… Lessons from history

History was one of my favorite subjects in school. It is all one big story. I came across this story and wanted to share it.

The story of the Golden Buddha. – Carolyn Tate

In 1957, an entire monastery in Thailand was being relocated by a group of monks. One day, they were moving a giant clay Buddha when one of the monks noticed a large crack in the clay. The monk used a hammer and a chisel to chip away at the clay exterior until he revealed that the statue was, in fact, made of solid gold.

Historians believe the Buddha had been covered with clay by Thai monks several hundred years earlier to protect it from an attack by the Burmese army. In the attack, all the monks had been killed and it wasn’t until 1957 that this great treasure was actually discovered.

The above is a story of a true event from history. But as I read it, its meaning and implications for our daily lives struck me. As we go through life, it is inevitable that we will experience times of troubles. I will not say “extreme” trouble because the word “extreme” can be subjective. We each can, and have, defined it in our own ways. Additionally, it is likely that we have been through tough times on multiple occasions at multiple times in our life. That is life.

As we went through these times, it is probable that we had to get tougher to make it though. We most likely put some type of protective barrier around ourselves, our hearts, souls and or minds. Sadly, it is possible that over time, this protective layer got thick.

I would like to think that when we were children, our hearts and souls were pure. Pure as gold.

Over time, we covered our own gold in these protective layers. Some of us may have covered them so thick we may have forgotten our gold buried beneath.

The golden statue in the story stayed stationary and protected for hundreds of years. It was stationary and seen, but not fully appreciated for its worth. It wasn’t until it was moved that the protective layer was cracked. Once it cracked, the gold shined out just a little. Despite just showing a little, the gold was noticed. Once noticed, the genuine wonder and beauty of this golden statue was uncovered, discovered and changed its value and the lives of those around it.

I believe we all have this within us. For some, we may bury it behind more layers than others, but it is there none the less. Can you see the layers hiding your inner gold?

My question, actually my challenge, is this:

What small steps, what small beginning movement can you take to help bring your inner gold to the world?

I hope this has been meaningful to you. If you would like to learn more about my new journey, please check me out, https://masonvandyke.com/

As I travel this ongoing personal path of reflection, I find it helpful, actually needed, that I talk with and learn from others. I would appreciate and love to hear your thoughts on this topic. Please feel free to e-mail me your thoughts, Mason@masonvandyke.com
